Why most removal firms won't move your aquarium
Updated · 5 min read
Plenty of people find out on moving morning that the tank is not going on the lorry. It is rarely the crew being awkward — it is usually a contractual and practical exclusion that has been there from the start.
The contractual reason
Removals terms commonly exclude livestock and items containing liquid. A stocked aquarium is both. Even where a crew is willing, the work typically falls outside what their cover contemplates, which puts the risk squarely on the customer.
The practical reason
A wardrobe gets wrapped and carried. An aquarium has to be drained, de-stocked, de-scaped, carried, re-scaped, refilled, restarted and monitored — with a living deadline running the whole time. That is a different trade with a different sequence and different kit.
- Livestock handling and acclimatisation
- Biological filtration that must stay wet
- Glass that must be lifted from the base, empty
- Equipment that must be rebuilt and retuned, not just reconnected
How to plan around it
Treat the aquarium as its own booking with its own timing, ideally with the tank running again in the new home on the same day. Tell your removals company the tank is handled separately so nobody is improvising on the morning.
Frequently asked questions
- Will a removal company move my fish tank?
- Usually not while it is stocked. Most removals contracts exclude live animals and items containing liquid, so a running aquarium falls outside the service and needs a specialist aquarium mover booked separately.
- Should I book my aquarium move for the same day as the house move?
- Same-day is common and works well when the aquarium is handled as its own job with its own schedule, so the tank can be running again in the new home by evening rather than waiting behind furniture.
