Fish tank moving checklist
Updated · 5 min read
A move goes smoothly when the sequence is decided in advance. Use this as a working list.
The week before
Groundwork that makes the day itself shorter and calmer.
- Reduce feeding in the final days
- Avoid deep filter cleans and large water changes
- Photograph plumbing, cabling and equipment settings
- Gather lidded containers, bags, insulated boxes and towels
- Confirm where the tank will stand in the new home and that the floor suits it
Moving day
The order that protects livestock and glass.
- Unplug and cool heaters before removal
- Drain tank water into clean sealed containers
- Move filter media into tank water immediately
- Bag livestock last, insulated and dark
- Remove hardscape and substrate, keeping both damp
- Lift the empty tank from its base, blanketed and braced upright
Setting up again
Rebuild in reverse and give the system time.
- Level the stand before anything goes on it
- Substrate, then hardscape, then water
- Restart filtration and bring temperature back to normal
- Acclimatise livestock slowly, then release
- Leave the lights off for the rest of the day
The fortnight after
Watch rather than intervene.
- Test ammonia and nitrite regularly
- Feed sparingly
- Add no new livestock
- Retune skimmers and equipment as the system settles
Frequently asked questions
- What should I prepare before moving an aquarium?
- Clean lidded containers for water and livestock, insulated boxes, towels, and photographs of your plumbing and equipment settings. Reduce feeding in the final days and avoid deep filter cleans that would weaken biological filtration.
- How long after moving should I wait before adding fish?
- Add nothing new until ammonia and nitrite have read zero consistently for at least a couple of weeks. The existing livestock comes first while the system resettles.
